Structured Cabling for Custom Homes & Commercial Builds: Get It Right in Rough-In
Fiber, Cat6, and low-voltage paths are cheapest when walls are open. How builders and GCs across Helotes and San Antonio can avoid expensive fish-and-pray later.

- low-voltage
- fiber

On a custom home or commercial TI, the network is part of the building — not an afterthought. Pulling Cat6 and fiber during rough-in is a fraction of the cost of fishing walls after drywall, paint, and trim.
Plan the drops before the drywall
Walk the plans with IT and low-voltage in mind:
- Office / study desks — dual Cat6 minimum
- Living spaces for Wi-Fi APs (ceiling or high wall)
- Mechanical rooms / IDF for switches and UPS
- Camera corners and doorbell / access points
- Future AV, shades, or smart panels if the owner is leaning that way
Over-provision a little. An unused drop in a conduit or wall box is cheap insurance; cutting finished walls is not.
Cat6 vs fiber — when each wins
Cat6 / Cat6A still carries most workstation, AP, and camera runs inside a building. For runs approaching 100 meters, PoE cameras, or dense Wi-Fi 6/6E APs, Cat6A is often the safer spec.
Fiber shines for building-to-building links, long backbone runs, and future 10G+ aggregation between IDFs. Many South Texas properties with a main house and detached office/garage benefit from a single fiber backbone early.
Coordinate with the GC schedule
Low-voltage should land after electrical rough but before insulation and drywall. We routinely sync with builders so camera and data paths don’t fight HVAC trunks or get buried behind wrong studs.
A short cabling walkthrough ($50 on our Square book) is often enough to mark paths, count drops, and flag conflicts before the crew closes walls.
Test, label, document
Every drop should be certified or at least continuity-tested, labeled at both ends, and sketched on a simple floor plan left in the IDF. Future you (or the next tech) will thank you when a camera NVR moves or a desk relocates.
Whether you’re wiring a hill-country custom home or a commercial suite off I-10, Nice2GeekYou handles structured cabling, fiber, and the handoff to managed Wi-Fi and security.
